Private recording
Composers Edition
Programme Note
Writing my Piano Trio was a task of the greatest tmportance for me personally. I had spent the previous eighteen months working on my completion of Elgar's Third Symphony, and throughout this period had felt that l was assuming that composer's personality. This was not a project which I had approached in a detached frame of mind. Although I was using Elgar's language, I felt that I was composing the Symphony as if it was a piece of my own, and on occasion wondered whether I was ever going to be able to be myself again. It was the Piano Trio that proved to me that I was, and I'm deeply grateful to the Lake Piano Trio, who commissioned the work, for easing me past this psychological barrier.
The work is laid out in three sections which play continuously, the second and third developing material from the sections that precede them to produce a cumulative structure. The poetic resonance is romantic and legendary, depending much on the sonorous harmony.
